The city of Los Angeles, Cal. has the Olympic Games on it’s mind. City officials have formally notified the United States Olympic Committee, letting the group know they want to bid for the 2024 Summer Games, ESPN reports.
The committee sent letters to 35 U.S. cities, looking for those interested in bidding on the games. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa responded, writing, “We are proud of our city’s sports heritage and tradition, and we stand ready to work with you to bring the Olympic Games back to the United States.”
Included with the mayor’s response was a letter from the Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games, which included signatures from actor Tom Hanks, basketball great Magic Johnson, and Olympic gold medal winner Janet Evans.
Los Angeles has hosted the Olympics twice, in 1932 and 1984. The last time they took place in the United States was the 1996 Games in Atlanta, Ga.
