John Oliver has already taken down net neutrality, FIFA and beloved Canadian cartoon Kayu (or Caillou depending on your region) on his news show “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” In a web exclusive clip he is taking down the number one children’s birthday amusement though — pinatas.
What’s wrong with pinatas? According to Oliver’s breakdown they teach children that animal cruelty is delicious (beat a donkey with a stick and candy comes out — yikes). “If you want to give me candy, just give me candy,” the show host says. “Don’t make me go all Joe Pesci on a paper masche Spongebob. Spongebob does not owe my money. He didn’t disrespect my family but for some reason we are trick-or-treating execution style at my nephew’s birthday party.”
Oliver then proceeded, for the sake of accurate internet headlines, to destroy a donkey shaped pinata on the set of his show. “Did that look as cool as it felt?” Oliver asks the audience. It definitely did.
“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” is currently on a two-week hiatus but will return on Sept. 7 at 11 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
