On Twitter, Michele posted her bittersweet excitement to fans:
“First day of glee today..And at my first wardrobe fitting for Rachel Berry for Season Five! I’ve missed her so much”
“Glee” was on hiatus at the time of Monteith’s death in Vancouver from a drug overdose. Although scheduled to begin production shortly after, all involved decided to hold off to give time for mourning and for script rewrites.
While the death of a co-star was tragic for everyone involved, the loss of Cory Monteith was especially hard on Lea Michele. She had been dating the actor for over a year, much as their characters had dated on “Glee.” There even seemed to be less drama in the real-life relationship, despite Monteith’s decision to check in to rehab this spring. When making decisions about the future of the show, executive producer Ryan Murphy said that Michele had had the final say in whether or not to go on.
She chose to go back to work.
“Glee” Season 5 will premiere on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 9pm on FOX. Two more episodes will air quickly in the fall before the show goes on an indefinite hiatus. Producers plan to address Monteith’s death in the third of the episodes.
