Hold your Lifetime hate, Lifetime haters. Yes, the Network for Women is remaking the classic tearjerker “Steel Magnolias,” which may sound like blasphemy, but … the trailer actually looks pretty good.
The 1989 flick is getting a 2012 makeover, starring and executive produced by Queen Latifah, who plays M’Lynn — the role originated by Sally Field — in the all African American adaptation.
Like the original, the Lifetime movie follows the lives of six Louisiana women, M’Lynn (Latifah), Ouiser (Alfre Woodard), Clairee (Phylicia Rashad), Truvy (Jill Scott), Annelle (Adepero Oduye) and Shelby (Condola Rashad), as they deal with life’s trials and celebrations — while, of course, congregating at Truvy’s beauty shop. Also, like the 1989 movie, M’Lynn’s daughter will be diabetic and pregnant. And based on the trailer below, there’s a chance it could be a virtually scene-by-scene remake — at least when it comes to the dialogue.
“That which does not kill us makes us stronger,” M’Lynn says in the preview.
Here’s hoping that statement doesn’t apply to watching this remake, which is scheduled to air later in 2012.
