CBS’ new comedy “Mad Love” centers on the relationship between a couple who fall in love at first sight, so it’s going to rise and fall on the chemistry of the two leads.
That shouldn’t be a problem, based on our conversation with stars Jason Biggs and Sarah Chalke. Zap2it spoke to the on-screen couple in January — during which Chalke swiped our notebook and started conducting the interview herself (as you can see in the clip below) — and it’s pretty clear that they’re not faking their chemistry.
“You can definitely fake your way though. We’re all professionals; we’ve done this before,” says Biggs (“American Pie,” “My Best Friend’s Girl”), who’s doing his first TV series in more than a decade. “But the real thing is obvious. It’s not necessarily obvious when it isn’t there, depending on the kinds of actors you have. … But it’s very obvious when it is there. That’s the case here — I believe it translates, and it just makes for not only an overall better experience for us, but ultimately I think a better show.”
Biggs and Chalke (“Scrubs,” “How I Met Your Mother”) play Ben Parr and Kate Swanson, who meet in Monday’s (Feb. 14) premiere and fall for each other pretty much right away, dragging their more jaded best friends (played by Judy Greer and Tyler Labine) along for the ride. There’s not much will-they-or-won’t-they to Ben and Kate’s story, but Chalke says they will face some obstacles to their happiness.
“It’s coming from both of us being so smitten with one another and wanting it to work so badly that small things end up triggering [crises],” Chalke says. “We’re both working overtime to try to make it work and wanting to work, but we have experiences [like] he says ‘I love you’ and I don’t say it back, and it creates this whole issue.”
“They’re like, ‘Oh, everything’s perfect, everything’s fine,'” Biggs adds. “Then a little thing pops up and it’s like, ‘Oh no. Where did that come from — aren’t we perfect?’ It’s just the normal trials and tribulations of being very much in love very early on.”
Shortly after, Chalke snatched our notebook from the table between us and took over the interview. Fortunately, that was also around the time we started recording video, so we got to hear Biggs talk about whether he and the pie from “American Pie” are still close and who might win a dance-off.
Take a look for yourself (FYI: Matt Tarses, whom they mention at the start of the video, is the show’s creator):
“Mad Love” premieres at 8:30 p.m. ET Monday on CBS.
