CNN anchor Cooper — who came out as a gay man last summer — was among several honorees at the 24th annual awards. Director Brett Ratner received the inaugural Ally Award a little less than a year after dropping out as producer of the Academy Awards after making the comment “rehearsing is for fags” at a post-screening Q&A. Ratner subsequently apologized and worked to rehabilitate his image.
Among the films and TV shows scoring prizes were NBC’s “Smash” as outstanding drama series, “The Amazing Race” as outstanding reality program, Oscar nominated “How to Survive a Plague” as outstanding documentary, MSNBC’s “Melissa Harris-Perry” for outstanding TV journalism and ABC’s “Good Morning America” for outstanding TV journalism segment.
