World, you might’ve missed your chance to see Mary J. Blige sing about fresh lettuce.
Burger King, which hired the singer (along with other celebs like Salma Hayek, Jay Leno and David Beckham) to promote its new chicken wrap, has had to pull Blige’s ads just after they started airing due to licensing issues related to the song in the commercial.
The song about the wraps — “Crispy chicken, fresh lettuce, three cheeses, ranch dressing wrapped up in a tasty flour tortilla” — is set to “Don’t Mind,” a song from Blige’s album “My Life II… The Journey Continues (Act 1),” the Washington Post reports.
Burger King tells Ad Age that the ad will be back up once the licensing issue is cleared up.
The commercial has encountered criticism, though — lifestyle website Madame Noire calls Blige’s performance “buffonery,” writing, “Having a black woman sing about chicken was no mistake. They’re trying to reach the ‘urban’ (aka black) demographic and they used you,” in an open letter. “Because God knows black folk won’t buy anything unless there’s a song, and preferably a dance, attached to it.”
