As we count down to the 2014 Emmy Awards, Zap2it is taking a closer look at each of the lead acting nominees for comedy and drama — and judging them not by their best work, but by some of the more dubious credits on their IMDB pages. So we ask you: Based on what you’re about to see, would you give this person an Emmy?
“Masters of Sex” star Lizzy Caplan is up for a well-deserved Emmy for her role of Virginia Johnson in the Showtime drama. But Caplan had to be in the acting business for a long time before she could get this role. If you go back a decade or so, for example, the type of material she was working with was a very different quality.
Back then, Caplan had to settle for roles like the guest-starring part of Tina Greer in The WB’s “Smallville.” It’s not quite the kind of role Emmy voters go for.
On “Smallville,” Caplan appeared twice as Tina. The girl — socially awkward and not very nice — had the supernatural ability to shape-shift into just about anyone. Tina used this talent to try to win the love of first Clark Kent (Tom Welling) and then Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk).
Impressively, Tina was able to copy her target’s clothes as well.
Watching the above video, which is a clip from Caplan’s second appearance on “Smallville,” do you see Emmy potential? The actress went on to bigger and better things quickly — roles in movies like “Mean Girls” and TV shows like “Party Down” weren’t too far in the future — but 2003 was a long way from “Masters of Sex” and Emmy glory.
