Matt Lauer is quite the hot topic these days. Rumors are swirling that replacements for Lauer at “Today” are being explored, he is reportedly on the “Jeopardy” hosting shortlist and the most recent story is a story at New York Magazine that details tense behind-the-scenes drama between Lauer and Curry last year.
Now Lauer has been apologizing via Twitter to an intern who said Lauer wasn’t that nice of a guy.
It all started when Fox 8 News executive producer Daren Sweeney tweeted, “‘I was just a young kid with a bright future ahead of me,’ @markzinni talking about internship at @todayshow and “not so nice” @MLauer.”
The Mark Zinni in question is on-air talent at Fox 8 News, who interned at the “Today Show” in 1997. After that tweet was posted, Zinni added, “i was an intern there in ’97, his first year on the job… how do i say this….? he was…. not nice.”
Lauer must have either seen the tweets, or had them brought to his attention, because he swiftly responded, “@MarkZinni huh? Always tried to be nice Mark. Sorry you didn’t think so. Hope you’re doing well.
Zinni commented on the apology, “What..A..Day.” and later added, “@MLauer oh boy…did you email my station today, because I got a nasty one! #karma.”
In Lauer’s defense, intern Judith Equihua tweets, “@MLauer @markzinni if anything, Matt thank you for always being kind and welcoming to interns!! (I’m a current intern) #thankyou.”
When someone mentioned on Twitter that EP Sweeney should be in hot water for starting this whole thing, Zinni tweets, “He’s a good guy… honestly, we’re all okay with it. what are you gonna do?! for starters, not fill-in at Today.”
