If you’re waiting for Michael Phelps to return to the pool for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, don’t hold your breath. The swimmer, who previously announced he would retire following the 2012 games, says he will not be competing next time. While accepting an award in Rio, Phelps explained his decision to call it quits, according to UPI.
“It’s been am amazing career and it is crazy to think it’s over,” Phelps says, “But I’ve done everything that I wanted to do in sport.” The 27-year-old seems perfectly content with that part of his life being over, saying, “I love being retired, I can’t stress it enough. I am happy, smiling, and more relaxed. It’s something that I have wanted for a long time and now I’m happy that I can make the most of it.”
Phelps won’t disappear, though. While he’s happy he was able to change the world of swimming, he plans to continue being involved in the sport, and helping to grow it. “That is a goal and passion of mine,” he says.
