Clint Eastwood and his empty chair might have enraptured Twitter during the 2012 Republican National Convention, but star of the 2012 Democratic National Convention is most certainly First Lady Michelle Obama, who delivered a speech on the first night of the DNC that had Twitter going crazy.
In her address to the DNC, which Obama herself reportedly spent more than a month writing, the FLOTUS praised her husband, stressing how he hasn’t changed since they first met 23 years ago thanks in large part to the fact that they were raised similarly and even after becoming a Senator and Presidential candidate, he was the same man.
“To me, he was still the guy who’d picked me up for our dates in a car
that was so rusted out, I could actually see the pavement going by
through a hole in the passenger side door…he was the guy whose proudest
possession was a coffee table he’d found in a dumpster, and whose only
pair of decent shoes was half a size too small.”
Obama managed to sneak quite a bit of policy talk in her feel-good speech too, mentioning healthcare, student loans and other hot-button topics. “Believe it or not, when we were first married, our combined monthly student loan bills were actually higher than our mortgage,” she says.
“We were so young, so in love, and so in debt.”
In addition to the inspiring speech, the First Lady, who wore a Tracy Reese dress and J Crew pumps, walked off stage to the tune of birthday girl Beyonce’s “Get Me Bodied.”
Also delivering inspiring speeches were actor Kal Penn, who left Hollywood to work in the White House for several years after volunteering on President Obama’s 2008 campaign, and Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick.
