Troubled country singer Mindy McCready and her 5-year-old son, Zander, were taken into custody by police in Arkansas Friday night (Dec. 2) after McCready took him from his Coral Gables, Fla. home earlier this week.
McCready does not have custody of her son — her mother, Gayle Inge, does — and a missing persons report was filed after Zander disappeared. However, McCready told press on Wednesday that it was all a misunderstanding.
“I am working with lawyers to try to get all this straightened out,” she says. “I did not steal my child, as it would be impossible for me to kidnap what already belongs to me! There never was any missing persons report and never an Amber Alert.”
McCready also announced Wednesday that she is pregnant with twins.
When she didn’t return Zander on Thursday as a Florida judge required, police were called in to find the child. According to TV Guide, McCready and her son were found in an Arkansas home reportedly belonging to McCready’s boyfriend. She hasn’t been charged with anything, but Zander will be returned to his grandmother’s Florida home.
McCready and her mother have an ongoing custody battle over the child. “We feel sorrow for Zander because he’s traumatized, and for Mindy. We just hope she does the right thing from here on out and that this is a wake-up call for her,” Inge and her husband, Michael Inge, said in a statement.
