“Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” continued its strong holiday-weekend run Friday (Dec. 23), topping the box office for the third straight day.
The Brad Bird-directed movie took in an estimated $9.7 million Friday and has made about $25 million since Wednesday, when it expanded from about 400 IMAX theaters to more than 3,400 locations.
The day’s only new wide release, Cameron Crowe‘s “We Bought a Zoo,” had a fairly modest opening, taking in $3 million and finishing sixth overall. The dramedy starring Matt Damon has received mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences, so word of mouth-driven business later in the weekend is possible.
“Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” finished second Friday with $6.8 million. “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” was third at $5.4 million. A pair of Wednesday releases, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” ($4.6 million) and “The Adventures of Tintin” ($3.5 million), rounded out the Top 5.
