Venice is filled with classical sculptures and masterpiece nude paintings. But the Italian city’s mayor finds a semi-nude Bulgari ad of actress Julianne Moore too scandalous.
The billboard for the renowned luxury brand shows the red-haired Moore laying on a chaise lounge with a discreetly placed handbag and two lion cubs. It was to decorate the Doge’s Palace, which overlooks St Mark’s Square and the city’s lagoon.
But according to the Daily Mail, the newly-elected mayor Giorgio Orsoni called the poster “inappropriate” and demanded that it be replaced by a less risque image. “An advertisement showing a nude woman on a divan is not appropriate for St Mark’s Square,” he told Italian media.
]]>Ironically, the poster bears a striking resemblance to one of the greatest Venetian works of art, Titian’s Venus of Urbino.
His nude is far more revealing and also features a red-haired woman and a small pet curled up next to her. All that’s missing is the Bulgari handbag.
Granted, Venus hangs in the Uffizi museum in Florence. But Titian was born
in the republic of Venice and was a member of the 16th century Venetian
school of Renaissance painting. And of course, Moore’s titian (a word that relates to Titian’s frequent use of the color red) colored hair is another clue to the ad’s inspiration.
Wanna bet Titian is laughing?
