Friday (June 3) is National Donut Day. We know, we know — you’re surprised to learn that such a significant holiday falls less than two weeks after Memorial Day. But indeed it does and it requires of Americans only that we indulge in fried sugary dough.
Legend has it the holiday was created in 1938 by the Salvation Army to honor women who distributed doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. It has, of course, morphed into more of a typical American (commercial) holiday in recent years, though.
Krispy Kreme is offering free doughnuts to customers from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at participating locations — any variety and no purchase necessary. Dunkin Donuts, on the other hand, is also offering a free doughnut — but only if you buy a beverage.
In case you’re wondering, we’re opting for glazed.
