There is quite a bit of buzz int he media about the sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela’s funeral, because said interpreter was not signing what the speakers were saying during the memorial. In fact, he wasn’t sign anything intelligible.
For those of us who are not fluent in sign language, “Jimmy Kimmel Live” is here to help us out. Kimmel asked its sign language interpreter Justin Mauer, who has worked concerts for “JKL” before, to appear on his show Wednesday (Dec. 12) and translate what the interpreter was actually signing.
“I support basic salutations, here, salutations. Inside joining in this week’s cigarette inside to prove and on and on to support I would please to say from me to you. Talking to you so far.”
He continues with a separate clip: “Hello, welcome, so far. Well cigarette join. Bringing in different to
you. A circle. And I would like to pray this offering, basically this is
fun. All of these balls to prove this is good, I’m sorry.”
Mauer tells Kimmel that “it’s complete gibberish” and in his opinion, this interpreter does not know sign language at all.
The interpreter, meanwhile, says he thinks he was having a schizophrenic episode during the service and was trying not to panic and become violent. The South African government admits “a mistake was made.”
