“New Girl” creator Liz Meriwether owns up to the fact that she didn’t handle the coupling of Nick and Jess as well as she could have last season.
“I had trouble kind of figuring out where the conflict and the comedy was coming from their relationship last season, admittedly,” Meriwether said Sunday (July 20) at the summer TV press tour. “I’m really proud of last season and I think they did an amazing job, but it’s definitely fun to keep them apart for a while.”
So is that the end for Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson)? Not necessarily. “I love them together, and I don’t think it’s it for them at all,” Meriwether says. “… I just found it’s been easier for me to just write them as single people, single idiots out in the world, trying to get laid and looking for love. It’s just been more fun.”
She says the writers are particularly having fun so far in Season 4 “writing Jess out dating and getting into jams.”
Such as? “She dates some real weirdos,” Meriwether says. “One of them may or may not have a micropenis.”
OK then! “New Girl” Season 4 premieres at 9 p.m. ET/PT Tuesday, Sept. 16 on FOX.
