A new photograph of Diana, Princess of Wales surfaced earlier this month, when the Caren Archive put the photo up for auction. The Caren Archive purchased it seven years ago as part of a bundle of photographs from the U.K. newspaper the Daily Mirror.
The auction has now taken place via RR Auctions in Amherst, New Hampshire, with the photo selling for more than $18,000 to a real estate investor from San Diego. The sum of $18,000 is well above what estimates thought the photo might fetch.
The picture shows Diana relaxing on a ski weekend in Switzerland with a young man and a bottle of alcohol nearby. The photo was acquired by the Mirror just days after the Royal family announced Diana’s engagement to Prince Charles and someone at the newspaper chose to mark it “not to be published” so as not to embarrass the Royals.
