Peter Wells might not have been a fan of Guy Fieri‘s new Times Square restaurant, but that didn’t stop the New York Times from hosting a party at the establishment the same day that Wells’ scathing review ran.
Dr. Phil let the news slip when he visited “Today” Thursday (Nov. 15). “Today” has brought on a panel of commentators, which included Phil, to discuss the Times’ review, and he said, “by the way, last night, they hosted — the New York Times hosted a 160-person party at that restaurant.”
Fox News put in a call over to the newspaper, and a spokesperson for the New York Times confirmed that there had been a party at Guy’s American Kitchen and Bar on Nov. 14.
“The New York Times ad sales department hosted an event for clients last night at Guy Fieri’s restaurant. The event was planned two months ago,” Danielle Rhoades Ha wrote in an e-mail.
Hopefully their experience was better than Wells’. He criticized everything from Guy’s American Kitchen and Bar’s food (both the plates that did and didn’t make it to his table) to its service, and all things in between. While Fieri was on “Today” earlier, he admitted that he thought Wells had an ulterior motive in his piece.
“I’ve read reviews. There’s good and there’s bad in the restaurant business. That one went overboard,” he said. “He came in with a different agenda. … Great way to make a name for yourself, go after a celebrity chef that’s not a New Yorker.”
