With the launch of OWN less than a month off, Deadline reports that Winfrey’s Harpo Productions and HBO Films are prioritizing a TV adaptation of the 2009 off-Broadway play “Ruined.” And Winfrey is in talks to play the lead role.
The story of a Congolese madam who has to tend to the women working for her during civil war, “Ruined” took home the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for drama for writer Lynn Nottage. And since its debut, its apparently been a hot property for Oprah.
Nottage is already on board to writer the screen adaptation, with Winfrey co-executive producing.
Winfrey hasn’t acted in a starring capacity since 1998’s Jonathan Demme big screen adaptation of Toni Morrison “Beloved” — though earlier this year she did sign on for an untitled feature comedy with Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep.
