Lupita Nyong’o has dazzled in a veritable rainbow of dresses throughout Award Season, and she didn’t disappoint on the 86th Academy Awards red carpet. The “12 Years a Slave” actress chose a gorgeous sky blue Prada gown for her big night.
The gown was custom-made for her, she told Ryan Secrest on the E! Red Carpet show, and she chose the color because it reminded her of her home country. “It’s a blue that reminds me of Nairobi so I wanted to have a little bit of home,” she said. It’s official: That dress color shall now officially be known as Nairobi blue.
Nyong’o was a natural with E!’s Mani Cam, showing off her matching blue cocktail ring as she paraded her nails down the (ridiculous) mani red carpet.
One accessory might not have gone with the outfit as well as the jewelry, however: The small headband. Did she really need it? She still looks as classy and gorgeous as ever, but that detail is probably the most controversial thing she’s worn so far this year. Like it or love it? Vote in our poll below.
Nyong’o took home an Independent Spirit Award for her breathtaking turn in “12 Years a Slave” — on her birthday, no less — but tells Seacrest she never really dreamed of winning an Oscar like most other actors. “I didn’t grow up watching the Oscars so for me it was something I really came to understand it was a big deal when I was in college,” she says.
