“Pacific Rim” pits giant robots against giant monsters in an epic sci-fi smackdown intent on burning up the summer box office.
Starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Ron Perlman, the brainchild of writer-director Guillermo del Toro and writer Travis Beacham is one of the few movies due for release this summer not based on some kind of pre-existing source material. Yes, it’s actually based on an original idea.
Cynics may scoff the whole thing looks like a “Transformers” meets “Godzilla” mashup, but based on the extended two and a half minute trailer above, it looks more like the movie “Transformers” could have been if it wasn’t directed by Michael Bay.
The trailer premiered at this year’s WonderCon and was also shown to exhibitors at this year’s CinemaCon, but now Del Toro has decided to release it wide with a brief note of explanation: “This was originally intended for only WonderCon, but after listening to
so many of you asking for more of the movie online, I think it’s time
for me to show you more footage. Enjoy, my friends!”
“Pacific Rim” is scheduled to open nationwide July 12.
