Another live action spoof series will soon be premiering on Adult Swim. Following in the footsteps of “Children’s Hospital” and “NTSF:SD:SUV::,” Paul Scheer sold a pilot to Adult Swim for a new show that parodies the likes of “Pretty Little Liars.”
Called “Filthy Sexy Teen$,” Adult Swim announced the pilot back in May. When Zap2it spoke with Scheer at an event celebrating the season finales of “Children’s Hospital” and “NTSF,” he opened up about the new show.
“We just sold a pilot that’s going air called ‘Filthy Sexy Teen$’ that’s a parody of ‘Pretty Little Liars’ and ‘Gossip Girl’ and stuff like that,” he explains. “It’s all kids. And Casey Wilson‘s in it, Sam Trammell‘s in it, Steve Yeun from ‘Walking Dead’ is in it, Chris Parnell is in it. Steve Yeun can pass as a kid, and Casey is the mom of somebody which is ridiculous because she’s only like a couple years older than the girl playing the girl.”
The plot synopsis for “Filthy Sexy Teen$’s” pilot says it “follows the exploits of a group of teens (and one high school principal) as they attempt to climb the social ladder by any means possible, even if they have to use sex, lies, and murder to get there. It won’t be easy in a school where everyone has a dark secret, and one mysterious teen is out to expose every one of them.” June Diane Raphael, Scheer’s “NTSF” costar and real-life wife, elaborated a bit on what led Scheer, Curtis Gwinn and Jonathan Stern to create the series.
“I’ve never seen ‘Pretty Little Liars.’ I think they had seen a couple of promo episodes and someone had described the plot of ‘Pretty Little Liars’ to us and someone was like, ‘Oh yeah, people just keep on getting killed in the high school.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah that’s really funny, but seriously, what is the plot?’ And they were like, ‘No, no, no, no, no. That is the plot of the show,'” she says. “We were both just fascinated by that, so I think that’s where it came from. But I secretly can so get on board with that soapy stuff. Like, I’m super into ‘Scandal’ in a crazy way. Soap at its finest.”
Though “Filthy Sexy Teen$” is a spoof, it is meant with the best intentions. “I think it’s a loving tribute,” Raphael says to those who created the series that these Adult Swim shows satirize. “I feel like they would love it. What’s not to love?”
