“The X Factor” auditions begin March 27 in Los Angeles, but Simon Cowell still hasn’t announced who will be joining him on the judging panel. In a recent Access Hollywood interview, however, he did drop a few names. There’s no telling as to whether he’s just being coy to generate buzz – but if he is, it’s working. Obviously.
One person mentioned, of course, was Cowell’s old “American Idol” co-star, Paula Abdul. The two always enjoyed working together and maintained an undeniable chemistry on-screen. “I’ve spoken to Paula,” he confirms. “It’s not about necessarily the TV show per se, it’s people you’ve genuinely got to trust… I’d say we’ve taken it down to a smaller group of people and she’s in that panel, but there’s more than me who make the decision.”
Nicole Sherzinger may be on the panel. “Nicole worked with me on ‘X-Factor’ UK, and she was brilliant,” Cowell says. “It’s like a high-class problem. So many people want to do the show but we can only put four people on it. You’ve kind of got to do it like this is your army. If there’s that much money at stake, 5 million bucks, you’ve got to have almost your dream record label sitting alongside you who can spot a star and turn somebody into a star and have had experience finding superstars.”
George Michael wants to do the show, but Cowell says he’s not sure if he reciprocates. He confirms that he’s spoken to Mariah Carey about joining the panel. He confirms that Christina Aguilera, and Katy Perry will not be on board. Nor will Elton John. “He’s so grumpy nowadays. He’d just be moaning the whole time. He likes being a mum. If it was the mum factor, maybe. If we’ve got somebody with kids, he’s more than welcome to come along and run the nursery. So if you’re watching, Elton.”
