Paula Abdul is taking some time to herself for a little spiritualty-searching. The former “American Idol” and “The X Factor” judge has taken a trip to Israel as a guest of the country’s ministry of tourism to get to know the country and hold a belated Bat Mitzvah.
“Beyond being Jewish, I’ve always found myself to be very much in tune with spirituality,” Abdul, 51, tells the Associated Press. “I feel very grateful coming to Israel now, where as a woman I know who I am a lot more than even 10 years ago.”
Unlike traveling to countries while on concert tours, this visit has allowed Abdul to act like a “regular tourist.” She calls the experience “the most magnificent trip I’ve ever taken … magical and emotional.” Thus far the visit has involved visiting Jerusalem markets, museums and holy sites.
Abdul also opens up in the interview about the twerking trend, saying it’s not as new as some might think despite Miley Cyrus helping it surge to recent popularity.
“Twerking has been around for many, many years,” the dancing expert says. “I think when girls dance, they should be girls. I don’t find it the most attractive kind of dance. My Chihuahua can twerk and stick her tongue out at the same time too.”
