Joe Manganiello is suddenly a very busy guy.
Manganiello, who will play the key role of Alcide on “True Blood” this season, has also booked one of the lead roles in “Livin’ on a Prayer,” a CBS pilot from “How I Met Your Mother” creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays.
The latest round of pilot casting also includes Poppy Montgomery and Marc Blucas in an ABC drama and Eugene Levy in another CBS comedy.
“Livin’ on a Prayer” is about a group of friends living in Pittsburgh; Bays and Thomas have described its characters as being one step further along in life than the “HIMYM” crew.
Manganiello, who’s guested on several episodes of “HIMYM,” will play a former high-school football star turned husband and father, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Bays and Thomas co-created the pilot with “How I Met Your Mother” writers Kourtney Kang and Joe Kelly.
The rest of the casting news:
– Former “Without a Trace” star Montgomery and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” alumnus Blucas will star in ABC’s “True Blue,” the showbiz trades report. The show revolves around six San Francisco cops and former best friends who work together solving a fellow officer’s murder. Blucas will play a detective and the ex-husband of Montgomery’s character, the only female captain in the department.
Jon Harmon Feldman (“Reunion,” “Big Shots”) created the show and will exec produce with Bert Salke and Chris Brancato. Peter Horton (“Grey’s Anatomy”) will direct.
– Levy (“American Pie,” “Best in Show”) will star in “Hitched,” the CBS comedy from “Chuck” writer-producers Josh Schwartz and Matt Miller about newlyweds who are still getting to know one another. Levy will play the groom’s dad, who’s been divorced four times, the HR says.
– Elsewhere, Nelson Franklin (“I Love You, Man”) has been cast in FOX’s comedy “Traffic Light,” and James Murray (“Krod Mandoon,” “Primeval”) has joined CBS’ CIA drama “Chaos.”
