Get ready, “Powerpuff Girl” fans. Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup are coming back to TV.
Variety reports that Cartoon Network is set to begin airing new episodes of a rebooted “Powerpuff Girls” in 2016, which will include a new series plus a full licensing program — which means merchandise.
“The original ‘Powerpuff Girls’ was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network,” says Rob Sorcher, chief content office of the channel, which began airing the original “Powerpuff Girls” in 1998. “We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugar, spice and Chemical X.”
VP of consumer products Pete Yoder adds, “As the original ambassador of ‘girl power,’ The Powerpuff Girls brand continues to resonate with people of all ages and there is tremendous excitement about introducing Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup to a new generation. With proven success and great content plans in place, there’s so much potential that we’re looking forward to explore with our licensing partners in the coming weeks.”
In addition to the regular series, which ended in 2005, Cartoon Network aired a “Powerpuff Girls” special in early 2014 that was met with mixed reviews. The animation was updated, which some viewers were unhappy with, and Den of Geek says the wittiness of the original was dulled as well. It remains to be seen if the rebooted series will follow in the vein of the special or look more akin to the original series.
