The “Pretty Little Liars” cast and executive producers took part in a Q&A for the 2014 Paleyfest in Los Angeles on Sunday (March 16) and the big reveal is that Season 5 is going to be a whole new ballgame from what the show has been its previous four seasons.
“[Alison’s return] is going to affect them all individually, it’s going to affect
them as a group, it’s going to affect their relationships with their
young male and female partners,” says EP Marlene King. “I think Season 5 is shaping up to be
emotionally the most complex season we’ve had so far. We’re having a lot
of fun in the writers room, it’s a completely different show. There are
five pretty little Liars now.”
Actress Sasha Pieterse adds that Alison is coming back to the group as “the victim” rather than the perpetrator now. “Alison has totally changed, they don’t know anything that she’s been
through yet and we have to find out the pain that she’s felt and what
she’s gone through,” says Pieterse. “Welcoming her back is going to be not as easy as it
One person who will not be a little Liar is Janel Parrish’s Mona Vanderwaal. Parrish says that she’s spoiling for a fight: “I want a Mona-Ali full-on girl fight. I love you Sasha, but I want a fight.”
“Pretty Little Liars” Season 4 finale airs Tuesday, March 17 and Season 5 premieres Tuesday, June 10, both at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC Family.
