When you put 15-plus outsized personalities in close quarters and have them compete against one another, you’re guaranteed some conflict — it’s a tried and true reality TV formula. But after a few boring seasons, it appears “Project Runway” has gathered the cattiest group of designers in years for Season 13.
There have been villain contestants since the beginning of the show, but have they always been this catty? The current crop of designers hasn’t been shy about bad-mouthing their competitors in their confessional interviews, and ganged up on Indian designer Sandhya so much after she unexpectedly won a challenge that they made her cry.
But to judges Heidi Klum and Zac Posen, everyone has been nothing but polite and docile. “They’re more bitchy behind the scenes. To us, they’re always little lambs,” Klum tells Zap2it on the red carpet at the 2014 Emmys.
Posen says that after 13 seasons, the designers know just how high the stakes are. “The viewers are watching. The fans are avid. I think social media has played a really big part in that,” he says. “[The designers] know the stakes are really high and they’re going for it. They’re going to build real careers for themselves if they want it.”
“Project Runway” airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Lifetime.
