An unidentified man was duct-taped to his seat after becoming unruly on board a flight from Reykjavik, Iceland to New York City. A fellow passenger on the Iceland Air flight posted a photo to Facebook, showing the man taped to his seat with his legs bound together by duct tape and zip ties, and tape covering his mouth.
Iceland Air confirmed the incident to CNN, but would not specifically confirm the validity of the photo that circulated on social media.
Michael Raucheisen, a spokesman for the airline, says the man’s “behavior was considered to be unruly and threatening.” Raucheisen describes the man as “hitting, screaming and spitting at other passengers, while yelling profanities.”
Upon arrival to John F. Kennedy International Airport, the man was arrested and was transported to a local hospital. No charges were filed.
Iceland Air says plastic zip ties and duct tape are considered typical protocol when restraining a passenger is necessary. They also say after the was tied up, the man was monitored for his safety during the remainder of the flight.
