Ellen: “I heard you just finished doing Steve Carell’s last episode, right?”
Rainn: “Yeah, we did.”
Ellen: “Wow, that must have been emotional.”
Rainn: “It was so sad. It was really hard. You have done sitcoms many
times and you’re paid to go there and be funny but when one of your best
friends is leaving and one of the most brilliant comic actors of all
time, not to mention, like one of the nicest guys in the world is
leaving, it’s really sad. It was very funny. The last day we were
shooting, I did one of those, I came in and greeted him and did one of
those half hugs but I had to pull away to hold in the tears and we were
both like, ‘It’s okay. It’s okay.’ It was sad.”
Ellen: “It’s going to be weird to see him go but the show will go on and somebody will replace him. And the show is great.”
Rainn: “We have the greatest team of writers. I mean, our writers are so
smart and brilliant and we have one of the best ensembles on television.
It’s an exciting time to try to reinvent the show.”
Ellen: “And Will Ferrell has been on the show a few times, right?”
Rainn: “Yes, he’s done the last 4 episodes.”
Ellen: “Rumor is that he’s going to take Steve’s job.”
Rainn: “Yeah, I don’t think the 20 million he makes per movie is going to
allow him to do that but no, he’s not staying on. It’s just for a short
period of time. He’s the coolest guy. He literally called our producers
and said, ‘I heard Steve is leaving. I’m a huge fan of the show. I’m a
huge fan of Steve’s. I’m a good friend of Steve’s. What can I do?’ And
they’re like, ‘Well, come on and do 4 episodes.’ And he just did it.
He’s fantastic.”

Steve Carell’s final episode of “The Office” is set to air Thursday, April 28.
