TBS and TNT each picked up a pair of new series on Wednesday (May 7), shoring up their original lineups for 2015.
The TBS shows are a cop comedy currently called “Angie Tribeca” and “Buzzy’s,” set at a barber shop. Period cop drama “Public Morals” and supernatural/medical show “Proof” got the green light at TNT. Here’s the lowdown on all four:
“Angie Tribeca”: Created by Steve and Nancy Carell (Steve also directed the pilot), the “Police Squad”-esque show stars Rashida Jones (“Parks and Recreation”) as the title character, a lone-wolf LAPD detective who resents being assigned a new partner (Hayes Macarthur). Jere Burns (“Justified”), Deon Cole (“Conan”) and Andree Vermeulen also star.
“Buzzy’s”: A former high-school loser (Ryan Pinkston) hires several of his former classmates to work at a barbershop he recently bought. Ashley Tisdale, Mike Castle, Lauren Lapkus, Matt Cook and George Wendt round out the cast of the show, from “Will & Grace” creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick.
“Public Morals”: Edward Burns created and stars in this 1960s-set drama about the officers of the NYPD’s Public Morals division, who “walk the line between morality and criminality as the temptations that come from dealing with all kinds of vice threaten to get the better of them.” Michael Rapaport, Elizabeth Masucci and Ruben Santiago-Hudson headline the cast, and Steven Spielberg is among the executive producers. (The show shares a title but basically nothing else with a short-lived 1996 CBS sitcom from Steven Bochco.)
“Proof”: Jennifer Beals stars as a surgeon who, after the death of her teenage son and the end of her marriage, is hired by a terminally ill millionaire (Matthew Modine) to investigate out-of-body experiences, reincarnation and other supernatural incidents, with the goal of finding proof of an afterlife. Kyra Sedgwick (“The Closer”) is among the executive producers of the show, which also stars Joe Morton (“Scandal”), Callum Blue, Edi Gathegi and Annie Thurman.
