George R.R. Martin, you’re spoiling us.
The “A Song of Ice and Fire” author and co-executive producer on “Game of Thrones”
is hard at work writing the sixth novel in the book series, “The Winds of Winter.” Just to prove that he is in fact working on it, contrary to fans’ beliefs, he has revealed yet another new chapter from the upcoming novel.
Martin announced the news on his blog
. “With season 4 of HBO’s GAME OF THRONES almost upon us, I thought the time was ripe for me to give my readers another taste of WINDS OF WINTER,” he writes. “The new chapter is actually an old chapter. But no, it’s not one I’ve published or posted before, and I don’t even think I’ve read it at a con (could be wrong there, I’ve done readings at so many cons, it all tends to blur together). So it’s new in that it is material that no one but my editors (well, and Parris, and David and Dan, and a few others) have ever seen before, but it’s old in that it was written a long time ago, predating any of the samples that you have seen. The first draft was, at any rate. I’ve rewritten it a dozen times since then.”
The full chapter can be read on Martin’s website, here. Like the chapters titled “Reek,” “Mercy” is a different name for a character Martin’s readers know well. The clues as to who she really is are early on in the chapter, but we won’t spoil it for you here. Let’s just say show watchers who expect all the Starks to come back together soon are going to be very disappointed by how far one has come in this chapter.
“Game of Thrones” Season 4 premieres on HBO on April 6 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. “The Winds of Winter” will come out … eventually. Hopefully.
