The writing foreshadowing King Henry’s death in the Season 1 finale of “Reign” has been on the wall for quite some time, but it was still sad and shocking to see him go. But now that he’s gone, it means that Francis and Mary will now be the rulers of France — roles for which star Adelaide Kane says they’ve been groomed their entire lives.
“I think they’ve been preparing to step into power their whole lives,” Kane tells Zap2it on the red carpet at The CW’s upfront presentation in New York Thursday (May 15). “I don’t think anyone’s really ever prepared for that. It’s like moving out for the first time, or going to college for the first time. You think you’re ready but nobody’s ever really ready.”
Mary has leadership experience, having ruled Scotland, but this is Francis’ first time actually living up to the royal title he inherited. “I think they’re going to have to trust each other and trust their instincts and just try and be the best rulers they can be. Mary already has some experience being the Queen of Scotland so she already has a bit of a background and I’d be interested to see Francis put his faith in her as a leader in her own right. I’d like to see that dynamic.”
Of course, don’t think Francis will listen to his wife just because she’s the experienced one in their relationship. ” It was a different time! Patriarchy ruled supreme,” says Kane.
Star Megan Follows, who plays the devious Queen Catherine, says like Henry’s jousting death (something that happened in real life), Season 2 will also pull in some actual historical touchstones. “We know certain historical elements and markers, but it’s quite an amazing canvas. I think the writers are in there right now,” Follows says.
“We’ve introduced certain things into play, certain elements and huge social shifts that are coming up, so it’ll be fun to see how the dangers of the outside world meet the dangers of the relationships within the castle.”
