“I agree with Justin Bieber. Anne Frank would’ve loved his stuff.
It’s perfect for being played really really quietly so no one can hear it,” Gervais quipped. “30 million illiterate teenage girls are now crying and cutting and asking google ‘Who is this bloody Anne woman that Justin likes so much?’ Joan of Arc was a great girl. I hope she would have been a Gervatheist.”
It took about 13 minutes for Gervais to backtrack on his mockery — though not on his cutting joke — and he made it clear that he doesn’t think Bieber is all that bad.
“On a serious note: I think we should remember that Bieber wasn’t being nasty,” Gervais tweeted. “He’s a prat, but not evil. Just a bit gimp.”
For the record, Bieber wrote in the guestbook, “Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber.” A spokesperson for the Anne Frank House later defended Bieber’s comment, saying, “He was here for more than hour and interested in Anne Frank’s life and that for us is the most important thing.”
