The original “Planet of the Apes” series consisted of five movies released within a five-year period. The 21st-century incarnation of the saga is taking considerably longer.
The first trailer for “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” has been released, and in it you’ll see hints of how James Franco inadvertently gives rise to the ape uprising that will one day enslave humanity. The movie hits theaters on Aug. 5, 10 years and one week after Tim Burton‘s take on “Planet of the Apes” was released to mediocre reviews and pretty strong box office (it made $68 million in its first weekend and about $180 million total in the United States).
In “Rise,” Franco plays scientist Will Rodman, who’s developed a drug that “allows the brain to repair itself.” He tests it on a chimpanzee named Caesar, whose brain function becomes greatly elevated and decides that he doesn’t like being locked in a cage.
