On Monday, Robert DeNiro attended a fundraiser for President Barack Obama‘s reelection campaign. The party was also attended by First Lady Michelle Obama.
“Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white first lady? Too soon, right?” DeNiro “joked” at the event. (We put “joke” in quotation marks not because we find it offensive, but because it’s not even a little bit funny. Not even in a we-shouldn’t-be-laughing-but-we-are-anyway sort of way. It’s not amusing.)
Cue outrage. On Tuesday, Newt Gingrich spoke at a Shreveport, La.campaign event and said that President Obama — who was not in attendance when DeNiro made his oh-so-witty crack — is responsible for the bad joke.
“If people on the left want to talk about talk show hosts, then everybody in the country should hold the president accountable when
someone at his event says something that is utterly and terribly
unacceptable as what Robert DeNiro said,” Gingrich says.
He was, of course, referring to the outrage after Rush Limbaugh called Sandra Fluke a “slut” and a “whore” for suggesting that her private university provide its students with birth control. Gingrich did not specify which GOP candidate should be held responsible for Limbaugh.
A spokesperson for Michelle Obama says that the First Lady found DeNiro’s joke “inappropriate.” DeNiro says no harm was intended. “My remarks, although spoken with satirical jest, were not meant to offend or embarrass anyone — especially the First Lady,” he says in a statement.
