The first trailer for “Runner, Runner” has debuted, and it looks like the film will show off a new side of its stars, Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck. Timberlake delves headfirst into the action genre here, which he only recently got into with the 2011 flop “In Time,” while Affleck is switching gears from good guy leading man to terrifying millionaire villain.
Even Ben Schwartz and Anthony Mackie look to be playing out of type in the film, which is a nice change for the stars. “Runner, Runner” delves into the world of online gambling as Timberlake’s character Richie Furst flies out of the United States and tries to illegally raise money to pay for his tuition. Affleck plays Ivan Block, the man Richie goes to work for, while Gemma Arterton plays Richie’s love interest Rebecca Shafran. Mackie portrays the FBI agent hunting Richie and Ivan.
The movie’s got a good pedigree, with “The Lincoln Lawyer” director Brad Furman helming and “Rounders” and “Ocean’s Thirteen” screenwriting team David Levien and Brian Koppelman. The movie is due in theaters on Sept. 27.
