The news comes within days of News Corp’s final decision to split into two companies: one for newspapers and book publishing, the other for television and film. Among many other properties, News Corp famously owns the Fox corporation.
As recently as 2011, all seemed fine in the Murdoch family. When a protestor aimed a shaving-cream pie at Murdoch’s head during an appearance before the British Parliament, Wendi was the one who leapt from her seat to defend Rupert. The couple has appeared to be more estranged in recent years, however. In a 2012 profile, the New York Times said that the couple were living mostly separate lives.
While the specifics of the divorce have not been made public, this is not likely to be a cheap affair. The 82-year-old News Corp chairman (38 years his wife’s senior) is one of the world’s richest men. Forbes estimated Murdoch’s net worth at $11.2 billion in 2013.
