In preparation for Sunday’s (April 20) debut of WGN America’s spooky new supernatural series, “Salem,” Zap2it surveyed the stars and producers of the show about their knowledge of the Salem witch trials and their favorite pop culture witches.
Executive producer Josh Barry is the final subject of the Salem Survey. Read on to find out why he’d want to clone himself, the most surprising thing he learned about the actual Salem witch trials and why he’s the best player yet at Which Witch is Which.
“Salem” premieres Sunday, April 20 at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. CT on WGN America.
Zap2it: What three items would you take with you to a deserted island (or puritanical Salem)?
Barry: To puritanical Salem I would take: An espresso machine, a time machine and a portable generator to run both.
Could you have survived in the 1690s?
I don’t think they would have liked me very much there.😉
Which witch is which? Name the book/TV show/movie/play each witch is from. No cheating!
Oh no! I already cheated because I read my casts’ interviews. But let’s see if I can name the actresses:
Glinda the Good Witch: Billie Burke
Hermione Granger: Emma Watson
Bonnie Bennett: she’s very pretty on “The Vampire Diaries,” but I can’t remember her name.
Fiona Goode: Jessica Lange
Sabrina Spellman: Melissa Joan Hart
Endora: Adele Dazeem, oh wait no, that’s Elphaba.
The White Witch: Tilda Swinton (love her!)
Willow Rosenberg: Alyson Hannigan
Pick one: “The Witches of Eastwick,” “The Craft,” or “Practical Magic.”
I pick “Salem.” Though “Eastwick” is pretty damn good, too.
If you could cast any spell, what would it be?
A spell to clone myself to be in L.A. and still on set at all times.
Would you be a good witch or a bad witch?
Bad witches have more fun.
What’s the most surprising true fact you learned about the actual Salem witch trials?
Almost everyone believed in magic back then and practiced it in their everyday life. Only evil magic, called malice, was considered witchcraft and punishable by death.
What is the most challenging thing about balancing both the genre and period elements of the show?
Both the period and the scares take an incredible amount of artistry to pull off. Thankfully we have an amazing cast and crew that makes doing both in the same show possible.
