Jennette McCurdy, who brought her “iCarly” character Sam Puckett to Nickelodeon’s “Sam & Cat” faces a tragedy with the passing of her mother, Debra McCurdy, who died Friday (Sept. 20) after a years-long cancer battle.
TMZ reports Debra was diagnosed with breast cancer nearly 17 years ago. She had been in remission, but the cancer returned in 2010 and spread to her brain.
McCurdy attended the People StyleWatch Denim Awards in Hollywood Thursday night. She was expected to host Nickelodeon’s “Worldwide Day of Play” Saturday in New York City, but has reportedly — and understandably — pulled out of the event.
Jennette, who is slightly older than her Nick character at 21 years of age, is said to have been very close to her mom. Zap2it reached out to Jennette’s rep, but did not hear back by the time of this post.
McCurdy is dating Detroit Pistons forward Andre Drummond. The pair met over Twitter, and though Jennette is known to be highly active in the Twitterverse, she has not surfaced since the news. Andre, however, posted a series of tweets that seem to be about the news. He started with a frowning face, then wrote simply, “D***n,” followed by another message: “In a dark place right now….”
