Andy Samberg returned to “Saturday Night Live” on May 17 to host for the first time, and the epic season finale was filled with so many amazing guest stars that it would have been easy for Samberg to rely on that star-power alone for the entire night. But the “SNL” vet proved why he was once a beloved member of the cat by putting on one of the funniest, most creative and all-around entertaining episodes of the season.
Watch videos of his best and worst sketches — including two that didn’t make it to air — below:
Best — Cold Open: Jay-Z and Solange
Jay-Z (Jay Pharoah), Beyoncé (Maya Rudolph) and Solange (Sasheer Zamata) address their fans directly about what really happened during that elevator fight, including revealing the footage’s missing audio. This was hands down one of the best sketches of the night (sorry, Samberg):
Best — Monologue
Even with the plethora of guest stars that came onstage, Samberg still managed to impress and entertain:
Worst — Camp Wicawabe
In one of the low points of the night, this camp sketch was random — not in a good way — and never really found its footing.
Best — Digital Short: When Will The Bass Drop?
This was just brilliant. In his first Digital Short of the night, Samberg skewers the EDM DJs who make ridiculous amounts of money without doing anything … until they drop the bass. And oh hey, Lil Jon!
Worst — Confident Hunchback
Another one of Samberg’s few low points was this spoof on Quasimoto, where the hunchback actually got ladies despite his deformity all thanks to his swagger.
Best — Weekend Update
Colin Jost has proved to be quite the capable co-host with Cecily Strong, and the season finale was one of his best segments yet. Plus, Weekend Update also benefits from a visit from Nicolas Cage …
Best — Vogelcheck family reunion
There’s nothing funnier than seeing a “SNL” veteran break character and collapse in a fit of laughter, so watching Fred Armisen unable to get through the kissing family reunion was even better than watching him make out with Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph, Paul Rudd, etc.
Best — Kimye Talk Show
Ahead of their Memorial Day weekend wedding, Kim Kardashian (Nasim Pedrad), Kanye West (Jay Pharoah) and their wedding planner (Samberg) reveal details ranging from Kim’s gown to the guest list. Pedrad’s Kim is always a highlight, and Pharoah was clearly on his game this week.
Best — Digital Short: Hugs
It was so great seeing The Lonely Island (Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Akiva Schaffer) back together on “SNL,” especially for this perfect short with appearances by Pharrell, Tatitana Maslany, and Rudolph’s Oprah.
Best — Legolas at Taco Bell
This is a perfect example of how a random sketch can work, as long as it’s simple and short. When Legolas (Samberg) and Gimli (Bobby Moynihan) are in the mood for something other than lembas bread, they head to Taco Bell. Extra points to exasperated Pharoah’s Taco Bell worker.
Best — Blizzard Man
Who would have thought 2 Chainz would be so into acting? The rapper enlists the help of inept rapper Blizzard Man (Samberg) to put the finishing touches on his latest record — and yet Chainz clearly loves his sound.
Best — Bvlgari
This one needs no introduction, except to say that this sketch will literally never get old. Also, can Tweedle-Dong (Kristen Wiig) stop by to help out every week next season?
Best — Testicules (Web Exclusive)
In this unaired Digital Short, Samberg takes his talents to a high society, classy French fashion show, turning heads thanks to his … genitals cologne. Yup.
Best — Weekend Update: Magic Johnson (dress rehearsal)
In another unaired sketch, Magic Johnson (Kenan Thompson) stops by Weekend Update to share how he really feels about Donald Sterling:
Musical guest: St. Vincent
