Kerry Washington is gracing the cover of the latest issue of Essence magazine. Inside, the Emmy-nominated “Scandal” star talks about Kerry vs. her character Olivia Pope and says that that ultimately, she gives her life over to God.
“Olivia has three [fashion] modes: Work Olivia, Black-Tie Gala Olivia and At Home Olivia … My fashion is more eclectic: There’s Going to Work Kerry, which is gym clothes and Nike kicks. That’s the Bronx girl. There’s also Red Carpet Kerry and Out to Dinner With Friends Kerry,” says Washington.
She adds that a girls’ night out for Olivia would “involve a lot of wine,” but for herself, Washington says she drinks “maybe twice a year.” Her girls’ night out would be with her “three best friends from high school or [her] girlfriends from the show.”
Washington is notoriously secretive about her personal life (having married NFL player Nnamdi Asomugha completely on the sly back in June), but in this new interview, she opens up about her relationship with God.
“‘I believe in surrendering my life over to my creator. I feel as if my relationship with God is the most important thing in my life. If I can get that relationship right, it helps me to understand how to negotiate every other relationship,” says Washington.
Turning to “Scandal,” which premieres Thursday night on ABC, Washington says that her character Olivia is complicated — and maybe not a person you should necessarily emulate.
“In a lot of ways, Olivia
is somebody who is very inspiring. She’s been able to accomplish a lot
in her life. She’s very successful, she’s fearless she’s bold. … But
in other ways, in her personal life, she’s really troubled and
conflicted and makes choices that aren’t always good for other people,” says Washington.
She also wants fans to know that she truly is not keeping “Scandal” secrets from them when they ask her what is coming up on the show — “We are just as hungry for each new script as you guys are for each
one episode. People will come up to me and think I’m keeping secrets
from them, but I really don’t know.”
The Kerry Washington issue of Essence is on newsstands now and “Scandal” premieres Thursday, Oct. 3 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
