If there’s one thing that Selena Gomez‘s new song “Come & Get It” makes abundantly clear, it’s that she’s not the same girl tweens adored for four seasons on the Disney Channel comedy “Wizards of Waverly Place.” The video for the hot track, released on Tuesday (May 7)? Just more proof.
Gomez dropped the video on MTV, telling the network that, while she’s coming into her own, she wasn’t without reservation. “I’m nervous,” she says. “I’m excited, though I honestly feel like it’s the best video that I’ve done and I got to work with great people on it. It looks beautiful, the wardrobe looks great. It was fun for me to have a little more creative control over it.”
The sultry songstress (and on again/off again Ms. Justin Bieber) teamed up with director Anthony Mandler, who also worked with Gomez’s BFF Taylor Swift on her image-altering “I Knew You Were Trouble” video. “When I got the concept from Anthony, the director, it was perfect, because he did an earth, fire, wind water feel, and it was very, as he called it, ‘earthy,’ ” Gomez says of the clip. “And I loved that, because I feel that’s what the track represents, and I like that we applied it.”
Ultimately, Gomez hopes that the fans who’ve been by her side since the early days get a kick out of the video and the new direction she’s taking her career. “I wanted to make it almost look like a film, so I’ve been applying that since taking a break from music to do movies,” she adds. “It’s been really fun, so hopefully they [her fans] will kind of get the cinematography of it and they will like my outfits.”
