Officials for the Universal Society of Hinduism tell WENN that Selena Gomez‘s performance of “Come & Get It” at the MTV Movie Awards was “insensitive” and they demand an apology from the singer for performing with the religious bindi symbol on her forehead.
“The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition in Hinduism and has religious significance. It is also sometimes referred to as the third eye and the flame, and it is an auspicious religious and spiritual symbol,” says spokesman Rajan Zed.
“It is not meant to be thrown around loosely for seductive effects or as a fashion accessory aiming at mercantile greed. Selena should apologise and then she should get acquainted with the basics of world religions.”
Gomez has yet to respond, but many of her fans were upset by what they called “cultural appropriation.”
“My friend who is a Sikh is raging that Selena wore a bindi “she has no
right, it’s like she’s mocking us, it isn’t her religion, we don’t go around wearing crosses. It’s not our religion. We would most likely
get burned to the ground if we did, why is she so special,” writes one fan.
Another fan tweets, “Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez both wearing a pottu (bindi)? I don’t know how I feel about that. Cultural appropriation at its best.”
“Ew Selena Gomez wearing a bindi and not having enough talent to excuse cultural appropriation #mtvmovieawards,” adds another.
What do you think? Should Gomez nix the Indian-themed performance altogether? Or just lose the bindi, since it’s a religious symbol? Or is she fine and people are being too sensitive?
