In lieu of traditional gifts, Shakira and Spanish footballer Gerard Piqu are asking fans to spend money on vital gifts, such as polio vaccines and rehydration salts, which will go to poor children and communities throughout the world. Items range from $5 mosquito nets that combat malaria to $110 therapeutic food designed to save the lives of malnourished children.
“To celebrate the arrival of our first child, we hope that, in his name, other less privileged children in the world can have their basic needs covered through gifts and donations,” Shakira and Piqu say in the shower’s “invitation.”
It’s a lovely idea and one that deserves to become a trend among celebrities.
