“Sharknado 2: The Second One” scored big ratings for Syfy Wednesday night (July 30), with the actual TV numbers living up to the social-media hype far better than its predecessor.
The movie drew 3.9 million viewers, making it the most-watched original movie in Syfy’s history. It’s also almost three times bigger than the initial audience for the first “Sharknado,” which drew 1.4 million people for its first telecast in July 2013.
“Sharknado 2” also scored 1.6 million adults 18-49, beating out the likes of “Extant” and “So You Think You Can Dance” in the same-day ratings (whether that lead holds up when DVR viewing is added in remains to be seen).
Syfy also estimates “Sharknado 2” delivered a billion Twitter impressions. “Impressions” is a fuzzy statistic — it counts every follower of everyone who tweeted about the movie throughout the day Wednesday — but the movie did indeed dominate social media. Syfy says more people mentioned “Sharknado” on Twitter than “#kimye” on the day Kim Kardashian married Kanye West.
