“Gossip Girl” executive producer Josh Safran may have filled Theresa Rebeck’s recently vacated spot as showrunner for NBC’s “Smash,” but the network indicated that Rebeck could at least be staying on as a writer and producer for the series. However, the Broadway veteran and series creator tells Vulture that’s not the case.
“Actually, I’m moving on,” Rebeck says. “I have other things to do. I feel like it is what it is and I’m really proud of the work I did, and it was time to do some other stuff. I owe Random House a novel and I was really excited about finishing that for them, and I am also going to the O’Neil with a new play this summer. So I just have a lot of things on a plate.”
Rebeck penned the series’ first three episodes and is the basis of the show’s character Julia (Debra Messing).
Do you think Safran can improve “Smash”? Is having Rebeck out of the picture really what’s best for the show?
