“So You Think You Can Dance” closed out its seventh run with gratuitous clip reels, our favorite routines, Ellen DeGeneres getting her groove on and the crowing of a winner. But we’ll get to that in a minute.
The night started off with the obligatory group number — and a good one at that — but what was intended to be a heartwarming addition ended up just making us sad and uncomfortable. Injured Alex Wong slid onstage in a chair to join the rest of the top 11 with all he could contribute: hand choreography.
Fortunately, reminders of the season’s many injuries stopped there. (Of course they didn’t.) Producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe took the stage in gag crutches, claiming he couldn’t dance. In his place, some random toddler tapped for one adorable minute. The pair walked off stage together, like Tiny Tim and a renewed Ebenezer Scrooge… only with dancing.
After umpteen promises of a “surprise” performance — and a day’s worth of spoilers that she’d show — Ellen DeGeneres took the stage to show there’s no hard feelings with FOX. She performed with all-star tWitch, upping her game just a little bit from the shuffling we’re used to seeing on her talk show.
And now to the winner. Somewhere in the two-hour broadcast we lost poor Robert Roldan — no surprise there — and was down to Kent Boyd and Lauren Froderman. Only one could emerge victorious, and given what a sausage fest Season 7 was for most of its 12-week run, it was sort of poetic that Lauren took it home in the end. Congratulations, Lauren. You did your gender a solid.
