“Spartacus” sliced and diced it’s way back to our TV screens with it’s second season (third if you count the prequel “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena”) on Friday (Jan. 27). “Spartacus: Vengeance” is the name of the newest season and if last night’s episode is anything to go by, it’s going to be even more intense, sexy and violent. That’s just the way we like it.
The big question isn’t just how the show did last night. It’s all about Liam McIntyre stepping into the role of Spartacus after the sad and untimely passing of star Andy Whitfield. McIntyre isn’t trying to recreate Whitfield’s performance. He makes the character his own. It actually works well. (Whitfield gave McIntyre his blessing and advice before he passed.) Spartacus is in a completely different place this season. The gladiators have left the ludis and become a rebel force, living in the sewers.
Spartacus has hooked up with Mira (Katrina Law) fairly permanently, though he refuses to give her his heart. He and Crixus (Manu Bennett) are dealing with a tense partnership. Lucretia (Lucy Lawless in a fantastic, scenery-chewing performance) has survived the attack and is out of her mind. We’re dying to see where this goes.
So what did you guys think of the premiere? Are you enjoying McIntyre’s performance? Are you over the moon with excitement about next week’s revealing Oenomaus (Peter Mensah) back story? We certainly are!
